Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
A Single SideBand (SSB) radio has a long range so is perfect for sending and receiving messages at sea.

SSB is essential for crossing the Atlantic due to its much larger range than VHF

This book explains how SSB works, how to choose and install your set, how to operate it and get your operator?s qualification. It has been completely rewritten and laid out in a new format.

1 out of 5 stars Virtually no information on Marine SSB   February 27, 2008

This is absolutely the worst book I have gotten from Amazon, and will be the first I return as soon as I figure out how. Firstly I purchased this book, since I have the same ICOM Marine SSB that is on the cover and I needed to learn how to use it. I just went through the entire book cover to cover and there wasnt one single reference on how to actually use a Marine SSB radio. The first chapter was on Why one needs SSB, the next on what is SSB, then more chapters on radio spectrum, and history, and Licensing etc. Then it starts with how to use a VHF and more info on VHF frequencies, then it jumps to CB and HAM radios. One example of some of the garbage in this book is "If you are using a hand held microphone, if you are right handed use your left hand to operate the controls. NOT ONE MENTION on how to use a Marine SSB, no mention of ITU channels, or when to use them. Nothing about Mariners Nets, NOTHING! Its amazing since the title of the book is "Marine SSB Operation" I needed to know how the group and channel knobs work, what ITU channels should one use...I'm so annoyed, that I just wasted an hour of my life on this dribble.

3 out of 5 stars good initiation   November 24, 2007
A good initiation for a new user. Does not contain a lot more than what you have to learn to pass your licence in Australia...
Some interesting points in the range question, day and night.
