Product Description
For Luke and his brother Peter, a week at their grandparent's lakeside cabin brings all kinds of new experiences. On warm, sunny days the boys go swimming and hiking up a nearby mountain. When they are kept indoors because of the rain, the family gathers around to hear stories. This summer Luke wants to catch the huge grandfather fish that lives at the bottom of the lake--this summer Luke wants to touch the sky. Full color.

5 out of 5 stars My Own Touch the Sky Summers   August 21, 2000

Jean Van Leeuwen's story of summer vacations at the typical Northern lake brought back many of my own childhood memories as I read it to my two boys, Pieter and Lucas. Even the names of the two brothers in the story are so close to home! I grew up in west Michigan and spent many Summer vacations with my parents and siblings, 5 sisters and 1 brother, at cottages on a Big Star Lake in northern Michigan. The sounds and smells and sights described in the book flooded my mind with pockets of fond memories of our family weeks in the woods. We also had our raft to swim to, about 30 yards out from shore. And as we grew and our swimming proficiancies increased, we were allowed to swim out with each other and, of course, our Dad, who taught us to dive properly. I found the book to ring true for many a families' vacations throughout the country. I know the text and the beautiful illustrations by Dan Andreason will be enjoyed by anyone who picks up this book and is swept away by its pages.
