Twelve-year-old Julie Morrison should be excited - her grandmother has invited her to spend a whole month at the New Jersey shore! But Julie isn't sure that she wants to leave her parents and brother in Chicago and fly all the way to the East Coast by herself. When she finally arrives at Gran's, however, her hesitations quickly disappear. Julia finds it easy to make friends on the island. Karen, her wealthy, next-door neighbor, lets her join the boisterous crowd of young summer visitors who spend their days at the beach. Tommy, the "native" boy who lives in a shanty by the bay and does yard work for Gran, introduces her to the fascinating lore and wildlife of the island. Unfortunately, as Julie rapidly discovers, Karen and Tommy want nothing to do with each other. Julie soon feels torn between her two new friends. If she talks to Tommy, Karen ignores her, and Tommy acts distant and uncomfortable whenever she mentions any other kids. When a devastating fire strikes the island, all the young people put aside their differences and join forces to mobilize the entire island for a relief effort. In the process, they come to a better understanding of what their varying backgrounds can teach them - and they discover that they really aren't so different after all.
