Great read with funny stories! February 27, 2008 This book really took me back to my OWN childhood, and sent me on a long trip down memory lane as I too experienced many of the wonderful things that Steve White writes about. I found myself constantly giggling while reading many of the hilarious passages. Steve has such a great sense of humor! This is a nice read... flows smoothly, and is light-hearted. I would highly recommend checking it out!

Steve's book will ring with anybody growing up in the 60s or 70s. Breaking the book out is a lot like having your dad break out the slide projector one summer night for movies or, er, slides. The images Steve presents may be of him and his family, but they seem so familiar and the book is a fast, fun read. It reminded me a lot of The Rescue of Miss Yaskell: And Other Pipe Dreams, which, until now, was my favorite book about growing up.
Act like trees fell on ya' October 27, 2005 In 'Family Vacations & Other Hazards of Growing Up," Steve White takes the reader on a roadtrip in a faux wood-paneled Country Squire station wagon (of course) loaded to the roof with Mom, Dad, obnoxious brothers and sisters, a cooler, plenty of summer vacation clothes, and a lot of fun. A series of autobiographical vignettes about his own childhood, 'Family Vacations...' provides plenty of chuckles, a few "Oh, I remember that's," and even a few good belly laughs. By the end of 'Family Vacations...' the reader gets to know pretty well the White family, including sister Chris, big brother Jeff, baby sister Bree, and of course, Steve himself, who is infamous for is "minor gastrointestinal activity."
Do you know what it's like to have a phobia of a community bathroom at a boarding camp and holding your mud for almost a week? Steve does. Ever been caught by your boss loafing and showing-off in front of members of the fairer gender when you were supposed to have been working? Steve does. Do you have any idea what it's like to be a rookie alter boy at a Catholic Mass for which the church is filled with 600 parishioners? Steve does. From family vacations to food to being an annoying brother to boyhood crushes, Steve shares many humorous and enjoyable memories of growing up in rural western Missouri. More than once, the reader will think to himself (or herself,) "Oh ya! We did the same thing!"
'Family Vacations...' is entertaining, safe, and sage, and an especially great trip for Generation X-ers. Once finished with 'Family Vacations...,' the reader will never again forget to "act like trees fell on ya."
Super look at US childhood February 8, 2005 For those not versed in US life, Family Vacations and Other Hazards of Growing Up offers a look into what growing up in the US was like. For me, who is versed in it, it served to bring back memories of childhood, like the smell of the vinyl seats in our 1970-something Plymouth Volare station wagon, and riding bikes in the vacant lots, and throwing dirt clods at other kids.
It's not all about vacations, but rather covers Steve's accounts of neighborhood friends, fighting with sisters, the perils and foibles of teenagers driving large cars, first kisses, and various other experiences.
I did several of the acts Steve writes about in Vacations -- like lighting model airplanes on fire -- and reading his accounts of those activities gave me a good chuckle. Glad to know I wasn't the only one Smile.
Steve's writing style is low key and funny, and its friendliness is certainly very inviting. Vacations goes down quickly
A great book, But left me wanting more. January 17, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have to be honest....I am a biased reviewer. Through total fluke, I ended up buying a car from Mr White...A wagon of course. This led to discussions of the book, of which he was kind enough to supply me with a copy of. Im not a big reader, But due to the subject matter, chose to read this entire book at my leisure.
I really enjoyed it, even though I read it one section at a time over the course of 6 months. Usually, After reading a passage, I would find I could relate to something, and because I had met Steve, Was able to contact him each time I had something amusing to share that coincided with his book.
I really enoyed the book, but felt each section could have been elaborated on a little more. I guess thats the most negative thing I could say is that I wanted more, which I guess is a positive in a way. I feel the book could have been longer and yet not feel drawn-out, but instead might leave me feeling more fulfilled.
I also felt it ended abruptly, to which I contacted the author and was told that it was his intent. But it literally felt like it ended mid-book.....Like there were pages missing.
Overall a great read, perhaps a coffe-table book that someone could read one random chapter once in a while and get a good chuckle without needing to read the whole thing, and yet may be left disiring to buy it and finish it. Maybe at a dentists office or doctors office lobby too.
Im glad I was able to read this. Kinda like taking a peek into someone else's childhood, and yet feeling like you are looking into your own. A worthwhile read for sure. I didnt give it a five only because since Im not a big reader, wouldnt feel it was fair for me to give anything a five without having others to compare it to of equal or higher caliber.
Thanks Steve! Looking forward to the next installment!!
